IMPORTANT TRAVEL INFORMATION FOR TRANS HIMALAYAN EXPEDITION

WEATHER: : Beyond Manali, the area is a high-altitude mountain desert with very little vegetation. The area falls under the rain shadow area of the Greater Himalayas. The main source of water in the region is the winter snowfall in the mountains that melts during summers. Recently the area has been experiencing unusual rains apparently due to global warming. It is therefore advisable to carry an umbrella/ poncho/ wind cheater in your daypack.

TEMPERATURES: From June-August, temperatures range between 20 to 30 degrees Celsius during the day. At nights, temperatures range between (-) 3 to 15 degrees Celsius, depending upon the altitude.

PHYSICAL FITNESS: Due to very little vegetation, the oxygen level beyond Manali is very low. So, acclimatization is an important aspect for this trip. All guests who plan to do this High-Altitude Jeep / Motor biking expedition must ensure that they are physically fit. People with weak heart and lung related problems should avoid this tour.

All participants are requested to get a comprehensive preventive health check-up done prior to the trip including a dental check up (dental issues at high altitude can be very painful). Also, we request you all to consult your physician about the use of Diamox (for acclimatization).

PHOTOGRAPHY:

Photography of bridges, airfields, military installations, army convoy movements, road constructions work in front line areas is strictly prohibited.

PRECAUTIONS AGAINST HIGH ALTITUDE SICKNESS

High Altitude sickness can strike at altitudes above 2,500 m, but is most likely to set in above 3,000 m. The degree to which it can affect people depends upon factors such as age and physical fitness. There are, however, some precautions one can take, which will reduce chances of being effected by high altitude sickness.

  1. Acclimatize yourself properly, always ascend slowly. If flying to Leh, take it easy for the first 24 - 48 hours.
  2. Drink plenty of fluids-except alcohol. It is advisable to keep away from any alcoholic beverages, tobacco, anti-depressant drugs, barbiturates; tranquilizers and sleeping pills. All these can worsen symptoms.
  3. Consume plenty of carbohydrates, less oily and predominantly vegetarian.
  4. Drink plenty of water, at least 3 – 4 liters daily to pass ample clear urine.
  5. Don’t over exert yourself. Walk or climb at your comfortable pace or speed.
  6. If you start experiencing symptoms of high-altitude sickness, do not go to higher altitudes until the symptoms subside.
  7. The Sonam Norbu Memorial Hospital in Leh has a team of qualified doctors familiar in dealing with high altitude sickness and other medical problems.
  8. Diamox has been used to help in acclimatization, but it is advisable to consult your physician.

THREE GOLDEN RULES ABOUT HIGH ALTITUDE

  1. If you are feeling unwell at high altitude (mild headache, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness & fatigue), it is high altitude sickness!
  2. Do not ascend with symptoms, rest at same altitude till you feel normal!
  3. If symptoms are worsening, descend immediately to a medical center!

Bike Preparation
We strongly recommend you service your motorcycle at the nearest KTM service center. Ride the bike for a short weekend trip before the tour onset. Ensure that the following is being addressed at the service center with the help of the technician.
  • Inspect your suspension before the trip
  • Check the rear swing-arm bush for wear and tear and replace if necessary
  • Check your chain and rear sprocket for wear.
  • Your bike’s clutch is really crucial for this trip. So make sure that your clutch is in order and adjusted properly without trace of any drag, slip etc.
  • Check your battery and earthing connections. The demanding terrain and the riding conditions that you and the machine are likely to encounter on the route could further accentuate existing problems.
  • Check all cables and if any are frayed, replace them.
  • It is critical that you know your machine’s fuel consumption.
